Street Team Reviewer: Susan

Posted by Charlotte Kirton on 15th September 2015

Introducing one of our Street Team reviewers, Susan!

Thanks for joining us on the blog, Susan!

Please tell us a little about yourself.

I’m from the US, currently living in Colorado, but I’ve lived all over the States and abroad as well. I served in the US Air Force and was stationed in Germany and Turkey. I then got my PhD and taught at various colleges and universities.  I now am thrilled to be self-employed, mostly spending my time on book-related projects. This is perfect for me, as reading has always been my favourite hobby, although I love to travel as well.

What are your three top Pride Publishing genres?

Overall, I like gay fiction, but more specifically fantasy, scifi, and paranormal, often in combination. Reading Tolkien in fifth grade set my reading tastes at a young age.

What is it about reading GLBTQI fiction in particular that you love so much?

I came into reading GLBTQI fiction through traditional gay fiction (a gay detective series from the 90s). What l love are men who aren’t the stereotypical straight white alpha males (sorry Hemingway) and who are often outside mainstream culture. I’ve always rooted for the underdog and GLBTQI fiction abounds with them.

If you could be a character from a Pride Publishing book for one day, who would it be and why?

I would be Cary from A Ring and A Vow by Devon Rhodes because I always wanted to fly and he’s a Navy aviator. Plus he married his college sweetheart!

Do you prefer to read series titles or standalones?

I tend to prefer series, as they give the author more room to develop their worldbuilding and characters. That being said, if the series goes beyond seven, it must be extraordinary to keep my interest. I sometimes read a standalone so good that I want the story to continue.

Have you enjoyed part of the Street Team?

I’ve enjoyed being able to select books that interest me to review and sometimes to venture outside my comfort zone as well. I like being able to read as many as I want too. I’ve never been disappointed and read a book I disliked.

What sort of books would you like to see more of from Pride Publishing?

The list of genres is excellent, but I would like to see more mature MCs and not just centuries-old vampires!

Where would be your perfect place to read for hours on end?

My perfect place to read for hours on end would be in front of a fire on a cold winter’s night with a great cup of tea.

What is your top tip for writing a good review?

Be honest but try to balance any negatives with positives. Remember the author is a person with feelings and this is their baby you are talking about.
